I FULLY endorse Yahya Nasar’s views about people not saying ‘please’ (April 7).
There is also another expression, ‘thank you,’ which most of us do not say. This is because of arrogance.
This lack of courtesy is most prevalent among feudal lords, moneyed people, high officials, men in authority, and those, like them. Saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to their subordinates and those they think inferior to them is considered below their dignity. They regard this as a status symbol.
Once I happened to go abroad where I was invited by someone at his home and found him saying ‘please and thank you’ to his domestic servant. This Islamic behaviour, prevalent in non-Islamic countries, is sadly missing in Pakistan.

You will find many more examples of courtesy and good manner ethics in Western countries but it is simply hopeless to call them Islamic. By doing so and being a Muslim, it makes you feel adequate and as if the job is done for us through us being born Muslims. Islam may look impressive on paper but in reality it a few light years behind.

Why must we relate things to religion? Is it not sufficient that politeness makes for a better society? Must we really connect this to Islam just to adopt it as a personal habit?

Manners? What manners? Let us go a notch more. Mullas and our elders always tell us about cleanliness. (Sifai nisaf eman hay). Muslims are enemies of cleanliness. Just see next day to what happens after Eid-ul-Azha. Imagine, garbage, cow hides, left over, blood everywhere. Just imagine our places of ablution, dirty, filthy, unimagiably dirty.
