SUKKUR: A jirga held in Daharki ordered occupation of the house of a man it declared as karo (adulterer) besides imposing Rs500,000 fine on him as a punishment for ‘love marriage’.

The jirga held at Al-Qutub Town in Daharki on Saturday which was chaired by an influential of the area, Moulvi Sharif Shaikh, punished Asif Shaikh for marrying Ms Shahida Shaikh.

Shahida married Asif of her own free will a year ago but her relatives did not approve of her decision, forcing the couple to go into hiding since the marriage. In the latest jirga, Moulvi Sharif Shaikh, imposed Rs500,000 on Asif and ordered the girl’s relatives to occupy his house after declaring him as karo.

Sources close to the family said the girl’s relatives had occupied Asif’s house after the announcement of the verdict.

Ghotki SSP Abdul Salam Shaikh has taken notice of the jirga and directed the SHO of Daharki to register an FIR against the jirga-holders.
